Another year and yet another Roman Bratasiuk single vineyard Grenache. Not content with the huge success of his Clarendon and Blewitt Springs vineyards, released as separate wines for the 1995 vintage, Roman has secured another small parcel of fruit from a vineyard with old bush trellised Grenache located in the Clarendon sub-region. The dark, brooding purple color is evidence of the truly amazing concentration of fruit that is achievable in these unique vineyards. Lifted spicy aromatics immediately spring out of the glass when you assess the bouquet. These flavors are only ever seen on the finest, most concentrated Grenache. Cloves and Star Anise are the most obvious and the fruit flavors lurking beneath the spice is sweet, stewed plums with some raspberries. The level of intensity is astounding. The concentration seems even more powerful on the palate with the wine almost requiring spooning rather than sipping, such id the viscosity. The fruit flavors take over from the spice in the middle of the palate whilst the finish is lengthened with mouth puckering grape tannin and plenty of acid. Grenache is generally a drink now style but this is certainly not the case with this wine. Give it 6-8 years and the wine will improve if this is possible. Selecting food with this wine is a little difficult because whatever you select will be to some extent overwhelmed by the intensity of the wine. Try rich and strongly flavored game like venison, hare and the like. At least the richness in the food will make its own statement. In Australia we like to eat Kangaroo with this wine but unfortunately this is not an option in the U.S.A. |
