What could Roman Bratasiuk do to top his 1995 Grenache releases. Well he has made even better wines with incredible concentration and power. This vineyard is the big one, producing the most intense and concentrated fruit suitable for the longest maturation period and this wine will live on and on for many years. The dry conditions of the 1996 vintage assisted the vineyard to produce a small crop of berries absolutely crammed full with flavor. This can be immediately judged by the color which is closer to black than red. On the bouquet there is an amazing lifted spicy character with a hint of pepper and licorice. The fruit flavor is pure raspberries, somewhere between very ripe fresh ones and raspberry jam. All of the flavors identified above are present on the palate, only in even greater concentration. The texture of the wine is fleshy and chewy and the finish is firm and tangy with loads of acid and tannin. It is hard to imagine so much flavor crammed into a glass. This is a wine to lay down for many years. It will need at least 8 years before it will start to show signs of development and will probably hold at a drinking plateau for another 10 years after this. If you ignore this recommendation and drink the wine now, and you certainly can enjoy the wine now match it with ripe white mould cheese and let the buttery texture coat your tongue and soften the tannins. |
