Print this Wine         1998 Clarendon Hills "Brookmans" Shiraz   CLARENDON                 January Release   Shiraz       It is truly amazing just how different each of Roman Bratasiuk's individual Shiraz vineyard wines are. This wine has deep purple red overtones with the color covering the wine right to the rim. Obviously this is a very young wine and it has not been filtered because there is a slight cloudiness. This promises that the wine will not be lacking in flavor. This wine has some bottle smells. Do not be alarmed, it will blow away after you give the wine some air. Indeed I would recommend vigorous decanting to speed up this process. This is an incredibly complex and rich wine. There are so many flavors it is hard to see the fruit on the nose. There is grilled meats and the smell of caramelized pan juices. There is plenty of spicy characters including caraway and Moroccan spices. In addition there is a mineral, earthy component which almost gives the wine a salty tang. The palate is full of flavor, and fruit characters make there first real appearance. These flavors are quite ripe and intense plums, tending towards prunes. All of the other flavors evident on the nose are detectable across the palate. At the moment all these flavors appear in isolation. They will require time to integrate together. There is still plenty of intense flavors in the wine so you can enjoy drinking it whilst it is young. At the back of the palate there is quite soft acid, but very powerful and firm tannins. This wine is built for the future, make no mistake. The fruit at the present time is somewhat compressed into the overall mix of flavors. Give the wine around 6-8 years and these flavors will merge together. Match the roasted meat character in the wine with real roasted meat, served with a sauce based on the pan juices. The dish would highlight the similar flavors in the wine and the sauce would soften the chalky nature of the tannin.
