In 1994 the ripening conditions were superb and Neil was able to select a tiny portion of his Shiraz crop for special treatment. Only the most highly flavored and concentrated bins were selected and then given extra aging in new oak barrels to further build depth and complexity. The deep dark purple inky appearance serves notice of the concentration contained in this wine. Sweet raspberry fruit is the first component evident on the nose along with spicy notes such as cloves and aniseed. Sitting comfortably alongside these aromas is the fresh sawdust and vanilla of new oak barrels. In summary intense and concentrated flavors all in balance without one character dominating. On the palate very rich flavors all combine to give the wine a viscous texture. The finish has plenty of structure with both tannin and acid. Despite being held in check on the bouquet by the spicy characters and new oak, on the palate the sweet fruit is clearly the most obvious component. With such an explosion of fruit it is tempting to drink the wine now and I would not attempt to stop you however given its structure this wine will develop and build in complexity over the next 7-10 years. Serve the wine with simple food as there is all the complexity you require in the glass. Simply roast a joint of beef and accompany it with a mushroom flavored sauce. |
