The traditional home of Shiraz in Australia, the Barossa has been well and truly challenged by an array of cooler climate regions where intensely fruity wines can be produced. The Lower Great Southern is one of the regions, and Judi Cullam and Barrie Smith lead the way with this wonderful wine which has been remarkably consistent since the first vintage was released. The wine is an imposing deep purple, verging on black. It gives every indication of concentrated fruit which immediately becomes apparent on the bouquet. Spicy raspberries and stewed plums on the bouquet, this is indeed a concentrated powerful wine where the fruit dominates. In addition to these fruit flavors there is plenty of spice such as cloves and nutmeg. All these flavors are re-inforced on the palate with a chewy, viscous texture adding extra complexity. There are grape tannins present but they are relatively soft whilst the acid level is quite high, giving a refreshing, slightly tingling effect at the back of the palate. Given the fresh fruit flavors and the acid driven finish this wine can be opened and enjoyed now but has the structure to develop with 4-6 years in the cellar. Big juicy beef steaks smothered in mustard or flavored with loads of spice would be just about ideal with this wine. |
