Every year this wines just seems to get better. The 2000 vintage provided wonderful fruit albeit with brutally low yields due to poor fruit set. The quality was sensational. On the nose the wine is undoubtedly exotic. Whilst classic Cabernet characters of dense fruit abound, as do the softer more lifted Merlot falvors, there is something plain exotic going on. Dark brooding fruit flavors, hints of earth, forest and mushrooms, even chocolate. On the palate all this is amplified. Joe Grilli’s adaptation of the “Amarone” technique of partially drying (in this case for a few weeks only) the Cabernet adds this “soul” or mystique to the wine. Joe’s unique combination of Frenach American and German oak adds to the wines charm and complexity. It finishes long, with lovely tannins crrying the myriad of flavors all the way. A very ageworthy proposition, that demands exotic foods whenver you choose to pop the cork. Truffles would have to high on the priority list!! |
