Neil Pike will only release a Reserve wine in years that he determines the fruit from this particular plot deserves the special Reserve designation. 2001 was one of those years. The fruit delivered wonderful intensity of flavor within a classic Riesling framework. On the nose traditional lime and lemon aromas are accompanied by hints of spice, earth and even lychee and mandarin. On the palate the wine is glorious. Dry as a bone, yet wonderfully complex. As the wine gets air it continues to change, revealing more secondary characters. The slate in the soil seems to seep into the glass. The finish is long and elegant.
Drink now or revisit every 5 years for the next couple of decades, such is the cellar4ing potential of this wine.
Extremely versatile with food. Seafood of any complexion, or anything with a bit of heat in it, such as Asian influenced dishes. |
