This would have to rank has one of the great Merlot’s of Australia!! All the fruit comes off the Elderton Estate in the heart of Nuriootpa. Rich purple in color, the ’99 leaps out of the glass with boysenberry and plum aroma, with spice and hints of sweet grainy oak in the background. On the palate, it is wonderfully seductive. Rich juicy plum, boysenberry and blackcurrant share the stage with dry spices and tobacco. The wine has great mouth feel, and is silky smooth from beginning to the very long finish at the end, assisted by well defined fruit tannins and great acidity. The 20 months in predominantly French oak has added a further dimension to the finish.
This is a cellar proposition, with at least 5 to 8 years in it. Serve chargrilled meats and sweet potatoes, or roast duck and cherries!
