Made by the irrepressible Sergio Carlei. The fruit is sourced from a low yielding (1 tonne/acre) dry grown old vines in deep gray loam soils, planted back in the 1940’s. It’s dark purple/black color sense something of the wines intensity. On the nose black fruits are in abundance, with trademark pepper and spice revealing its cool climate origins.
On the palate, the density of flavor is phenomenal. Fruit flavors persist right through the long finish, with secondary dry spices, pepper and even hints of tobacco going along for the ride. The wine has wonderful mouth feel, with all elements beautifully integrated, yet layered for all to see.
No doubt the natural yeast fermentation, and maturation in new and old French barriques have assisted in making this a very complete wine. Cellar for 8 to 10 years.
Enjoy with anything from steak to venison or just great cheese. |
