The ’99 is a great follow up to the highly rated ’98. In fact, this years model exhibits even more balance, without losing any of its punch.
The dark red, purplish color hints at the richness you are confronted with on the nose. Chocolate, blackcurrant and hints of mulberry abound. Pleasing oak characters (combination of American & French) linger in the background, but the fruit is king.
On the palate, sweet dark plum characters add to the richness of the wine, and weave in amongst those softer fruit characters seen on the nose. The finish just keeps going, fuelled by good acidity and lovely firm but rounded fruit and oak tannins.
This is drinking beautifully now, but has at least 8 to 10 years to go. Think braised meats, stews, or just a rich dense mature cheese.
