The 1999 Rayner Vineyard Shiraz is the 6th release from this tiny dry land block of fifty year old vines. Concentrated brandy plum cake and dark chocolate are hallmarks of the style - distinctly McLaren Vale and distinctly shiraz. The colour is a deep purple red and quite dense. The oak maturation for Rayner is 100% new American oak. The vanillin lift and soft tannins complement the style. Dark chocolate, dark berry fruit aromas feature. The alcohol, often needing to be high to get optimum ripeness is at 14%. This adds viscosity and length to the palate. There is sufficient grape and oak tannin to preserve the wine and provide a drying textured finish with. Opulent is often used to describe McLaren Vale Shiraz and appropriate here. As such they can be consumed reasonably young, however, longer-term bottle age is recommended.
Suggested foods: Beef fillet and osso bucco will combat the grace and power of this wine. But try to cellar at least a few bottles for later years.
