With only twelve acres of the 1968 plantings, there is little room for error. Despite difficult conditions, the 1999 Graveyard Shiraz has the frame of the 1995 and 1997, leather and savoury tannin. Excellent good colour, dense and youthful purple hues the feature. Aromas include dusty earth, clove and red cherry fruit character with spicy and some coconut oak. The initial mouthfeel is of drying tannins but this gives way to plums/cherry fruit. The oak is integrated with some obvious char, briar and toasted almonds. Quite drying towards the end but not too grippy. A few more months in bottle will see more sweetness and any ‘rough edge’ tannins can be fined out. Distinctive Hunter characters and will develop to a classic dry leather, cedar Shiraz. This is a keeper, if you can stave off temptation.
Suggested Foods: This wine demands the best of beef or veal, cooked without to many intrusions. |
