A first ever release for this wine in the US.. A 53% Sauvignon Blanc and 47% Semillon blend from Bill Ireland and Al Gillespie, with Martin Shaw of Shaw & Smith fame as consultant. Normally Semillon as a young wine is relatively neutral, however in the Margaret River it produces lively herbal bite that is just not achieved in other regions. Color wise this wine does not indicate its true character. It is a pale lemon gold with just the slightest hint of green. It is on the bouquet where the wine comes to life. It has a beguiling mixture of ripe tropical notes with some herbal and grassy components. It is clean and refreshing without any other flavors to interfere with the fruit. On the palate the wine shows great rich fruit flavor; yet with the herbal overtones it has a steely, almost austere finish, with crisp acid and a chalky texture. As is the norm for this genre drink it whilst the fruit is fresh. It will continue to develop and be a pleasant drink in years to come but it will be at its peak as a very young wine. Don’t be afraid to chill the wine right down low and drink it as an aperitif on a hot day. The steely acidic finish will make a refreshing start to a meal. With an appetiser try it with a goats cheese salad. |
