Words simply fail to convey the unique positioning of the Gaia vineyard. This is the highest vineyard in the Clare, hidden on 5,000ft graziers property. You will never find it alone!! A very unforgiving growing location for the vines. They have toi work hard to reach down through broken slate to find nutrients. Appearance wise the hue is very dark and deep purple red. With no drop off in color near the rim, you know that there is plenty of concentration with this wine. A generous earthy, mineral component is the contribution from the slate bed to this wine. This is immediately evident on the bouquet along with a very intense array of red and black fruit flavors. The fruits include red currant, plums, cherries and mulberries. Along with these characters there is an overlay of oak, just lingering in the background. The char level is evident but not dominant. All of the aromas promise a great palate and this wine certainly delivers. The fruit flavors are very much prominent at the front of the palate whilst the more subdued earthy notes and the oak characters fill out the back of the palate. The finish sees a really firm grip from tannin with plenty of acid as well. Given the firmness of finish this is a wine to lay down. It will reach its peak after another 5 to 8 years of bottle age. At this time it should plateau out and drink well for many years after. Select a rich and hearty hot pot dish if you plan to drink the wine in its youth. The flavors of wild mushrooms or even truffle will marry well with the earthy nature of the wine. The meat should have plenty of flavor of its own and lots of rich pan juices that will help to soften some of the tannins. Do not be afraid to incorporate spices in the dish as the wine has sufficient fruity flavors to carry a hit of chilli and the like. |
