This is the “first time” release of a Gary Farr under his own label. The first crop should have been from the 1998 vintage however that was virtually wiped out with a freak hailstorm. So this is Gary’s own wine and whilst it shares many similar traits with the Bannockburn Vineyards wine it has its own unique flavor and style. It is burgundy in color but it is deep in hue and the color extends right to the rim, indicating both youth and concentration. Already the wine displays a degree of complexity not normally associated with wines so young and from Pinot Noir made outside of Burgundy. There are some plums, cherries and blueberries as well as nuts and straw and the sweet scent of forest undergrowth. As well as these flavors derived from the grapes and the fermentation there is also the added component of the oak which adds an overlay vanilla and toast. The palate confirms the promise of the bouquet with all flavors blending well together. The texture is the key here as it is silky, a wonderful quality that is only ever present in the finest wines made from the fickle Pinot Noir. The finish is gentle and soft with tannin but alive and vibrant with the acid. Drink the wine whilst the fruit is still fresh, or give it time to age, as it certainly has the potential All the usual food matches often suggested for Pinot Noir, such as Duck or Squab will work here. I think Squab, particularly if prepared in an Asian manner will provide the best matching possibility as it will highlight some of the added complex flavors in the wine such as the forest floor character. |
