This is another first time release from Roman Bratasiuk, bringing his 'stable' of Shiraz to six. It is a very worthy inclusion. In appearance it is a dark ruby red with purple tinges and absolutely no drop off in color intensity near the rim. This gives a little sneak preview of what to expect when you taste the wine. You are expecting that the wine will be big and powerful. Even as a baby this is an exceedingly complex wine. The nose sees a variety of flavors, including some toasty vanilla from the best French barrels. The fruit is a rich plum and black cherry flavor with some herbal and straw aromas, and extra richness typified by chocolate and licorice notes. All of those diverse flavors seemlessly blend together on the palate. The fruit is dominant although the spicy licorice is very much an integral part of the wine. It is without any doubt a very intense and super ripe wine, as evidenced by its 14.5 degrees of alcohol, yet it never seems “hot” and overblown. Just when you think the fruit is going to drift away there is a big blast of drying tannins along with some crisp acidity. This gives extra definition to the finish. It will also help preserve the fruit whilst it remains inside the bottle. This is not a “drink now” wine. In fact it’s a 'drink much later' wine. You should wait at least 10 years if not more, such is the concentration. This is a wine for big chunks of just cooked red meat, preferably beef but lamb or venison wouldn’t be too bad. Do not serve anything too fancy with the meat as the wine has so much flavor you do not want anything to compete with it. If you need a to drink the wine now grab the most mature white mould, brie style, cheese and serve that with some crusty bread and some ripe pears. |
