This is one of those “rogue” blends that works wonderfully well. Joe Grilli has crafted a wine that is 50% Shiraz, 35% Sangiovese and 5% of each of Cabernet, Nebbiolo and Barbera. Joe Grilli getting into Italian varieties. “Il Briccone” translates as “the rogue”. The color is quite dark and rich red to black. The depth of color signifies concentration, and this in turn promises some richness in the fruit character. The bouquet offers a variety of fruit flavors as well as some other secondary complexing notes. Plums, black cherries and raspberries combine with other characters including nuts, a briary overtone and also some earthy and mineral flavors. There is a different flavor every-time you put your nose to the glass. This is a wine to take time over and contemplate. Even consider decanting this wine well before service and allow the aromas a chance to escape with a little breathing. Once you taste the wine you are immediately impressed with the concentration of fruit with an intense chewy texture. The fruit flavors take center stage here with the cherry character being the most prominent. It is an intriguing mixture of sweet ripeness with a just a faint touch of bitterness at the finish, due to the mixture of grape varieties, with the sweetness supplied by the Shiraz and the tartness provided by the Sangiovese. You could enjoy the wine now, or over the next 3 to 5 years. Drink the wine with suitably Italian inspired food. It is a full-bodied red and requires a dish that has plenty of body itself. Osso Bucco would be fabulous with its gelatinous texture and rich sauce; spiked with some citrus flavors this match would be complete. |
