As per usual Iain Riggs and his talented team at Brokenwood have sourced fruit for their Shiraz from vineyards far away from their Hunter Valley base. They believe careful selection of fruit is essential, and take great pride in producing a consistent wine from different vineyards. The 1999 vintage is drawn from two regions in South Australia, McLaren Vale and Padthaway. With the color there is a deep dark garnet running all the way to the rim of the glass. There is no intensity drop off or orange discoloration at all. For such a young wine there is a multitude of fragrances. The fruit flavors are the most apparent with raspberry, black cherries and some plums. These all indicate the riper and sun drenched McLaren Vale component. There are some earthy and slightly herbal notes, which is a representation of the Padthaway fruit. Meeting somewhere in the middle are some chocolate and earthy aromas. The palate sees some sweet oak characters making their way through the flavor mix. The finish to the wine is remarkably soft. Remarkable because this is a very substantial wine. There is intensity across the mid palate and it seems to build in character as it stays in the mouth. Yet somehow it seems very soft and easy to drink at the back of the palate. It will benefit by 8 to 10 years of bottle age. If you want to enjoy the easy drinking fresh young style try and match it with something from the barbecue. The charred aromas from the grill will sit well with the oak and chocolate characters whilst the sweet fruit will take away some of the more bitter characters. The wine is heavy enough to partner any red meat but not so heavy to swamp the more delicately flavored meats like tender steak fillets or veal. |
