  Tasting Notes

This premium wine from mature, dry grown and very low yielding vines has now become one of Australiaıs classic wines. Itıs reputation is justly deserved and this wine only adds further lustre to the label.
The vintage variation in the Hunter Valley can be quite dramatic. Weather can be fickle with rain during vintage constantly threatening the grapes. The two greatest factors that will eliminate much of these variations are old vines and a careful and no compromise winemaking team. This wine has fully mature vines and Iain Riggs leading an experienced, caring team.
The color and appearance is very impressive with this particular release. Quite often this wine already shows a little early browning and whilst this is not an indication of inferior ageing potential, it is even more reassuring to see purple tones.
Wow, what a bouquet! There are a whole multitude of flavors here. Sweet fruit with plums, blueberries and blackberries is the first thing you notice. Secondly there is some charry, toasty oak. The oak doesnıt dominate and it comes as somewhat of a surprise to find out that it is totally new oak barrels. There are some leather and earthy notes lurking in the background.
Above all other characters is the sensation of richness and opulence across the palate. There is amazing concentration and intensity. The fruit flavors are wrapped up with the oak characters and the heavy and viscous texture. Look for the earthy characters to develop and become more prominent with time. The finish shows firm, finely grained tannins. This is a very impressive wine with all of its life ahead of it.
Try this wine now because it truly is stunning. Please try and cellar a few bottles. This wine will easily develop and become even more interesting to drink with a decade underground. It is always difficult to estimate the optimum drinking window. Indeed this wine will probably age well beyond this 10 year period, perhaps even a further 10 years. Just have fun trying the wine yourself to see when you prefer to open and enjoy the wine.
If you are about to drink the wine now go out and purchase a ripe and runny white mould cheese. Have a few accompaniments on hand. A little quince paste and some dry wholemeal biscuits. Keep it simple and you will enjoy this great wine even more.
