Print this Wine         1998 Joseph "La Magia" Botrytis Riesling   EDEN VALLEY                 January Release Case Size: 12/375ml Dessert Wine       Once again Joe Grilli triumphs with this wonderful wine, certainly deserving its name. The translation is "The Magic". The magic is the Noble Rot or Botrytis. Joe has experimented with Botrytis affected wines for many years. It has only been in the last few vintages that he has been confident enough to put the wine under the banner of his exclusive ‘Joseph’ range. Sometimes appearances can be deceptive. This wine is quite pale lemon gold in color and offers little evidence of the flavor burst to follow. It is clear and brilliant. On the palate there is intense fruit combined with the unmistakable apricot jam flavor of the Noble Rot. The fruit flavor is all citrus and several different types of citrus flavors. There are limes, oranges and mandarins all evident wrapped up with a slightly bitter marmalade character. All that was promised with the bouquet delivers on the palate. The intensity is amazing with all the fruit flavors seemingly riper and more luscious than indicated by the scent. The texture is rich without being overly cloying. At the finish there is plenty of acid to make a fine balance between the sweetness and the bitterness of the Botrytis. The flavors linger on and on. The wine looks very youthful at the moment and I have no qualms about recommending that you put the wine away for 5 to 8 years if you have a preference for aged and softer dessert wine. The trade off is a loss in the fruit richness and this would be a pity. I would therefore have a slight preference for early consumption to take advantage of the fruity burst of a young wine. Try the wine with most fruit based desserts. Particularly citrus desserts and those using citrus sauces are the best alternatives. The wine would make a great companion with cheese. Select strongly flavored cheese such as blue vein or aged and piquant parmesan style. Here the sweetness can be used as a counterfoil.         How do I download Hi-Res Labels?
