Semillon is a classic variety from one of the oldest wine regions in the country. Generally these wines require a lengthy period in the cellar before they are ready. Iain Riggs changed all this with his arrival in the valley. He has consciously striven for a style that would make superb youthful drinking. This wine now stands alone as the finest early drinking Semillon from the Hunter Valley and has appeal not only for traditional Semillon fanciers but also followers of other varieties enjoy the freshness and impact of this wine. Iain also makes a small amount of Semillon that needs to be aged and minute quantities of these wines are periodically released but that is a different story. The color is very pale with just a hint of a green tinge around the rim. It is super clear and brilliant. There is considerable lifted perfume and herbal characters on the bouquet. The most prominent flavors are lemongrass, tarragon and thyme. There is the more ethereal waft of flowers in full bloom that makes this quite a complex mixture of characters. In addition to the busy bouquet there are other flavors that come to the fore on the palate. Here there are some honey overtones, along with straw, a classic Semillon trait, dressed up in a mouth-filling rich textured wine. Just at the back of the palate there is also some minerals and slate. This is no doubt regionally derived. The finish is dry with medium acid levels, neither soft or particularly piercing. This wine is very attractive right now and will drink well for the next 2 years or so. There is no need to cellar the wine. Wait for the specially made and aged traditional style to be released at a later date. Play on the zesty herbal flavors, particularly the lemongrass and look towards fragrant Asian inspired dishes such as broth with seafood dumplings and chicken salads with spicy dressings. |
