This wine has well and truly arrived. Over the past few years the wine has been very impressive and indeed if there is a region outside the Clare and Eden Valleys to equal the exquisite nature of Riesling then the Lower Great Southern is the most likely.
Judi Cullam and Barrie Smith have certainly set their sights on producing the best possible Riesling from their vineyards. This vintage is the best one, so far. The single vineyard “Isolation Ridge” appellation has been applied to the wine for the first time, indicative of the high quality of the wine.
Pale lemon with a slight green tinge the wine retains the appearance of youth and vitality. The bouquet is also very youthful with orange peel mixing with a powdery, mineral component. Riesling typically shows its “terroir” and this wine is certainly in this category. There are other perfumes in there as well with citrus oils such as lemon and lime. The wine is very fragrant.
Whilst light on the palate the wine lacks nothing in intensity. The citrus flavors take over on the front of the palate with lemon and orange being most obvious. The mid palate see the powdery, talc character and earthy, mineral characters seeming to take over from the fruit. The finish is bone dry with steely, almost piercing acidity that can be tasted well after the wine has been swallowed.
Riesling from quality Australian producers has shown outstanding aging potential. There is no reason for this wine not to follow in this tradition. Indeed Judi and Barrie have made this wine to develop and age over a considerable period of time. It could conceivably develop for about 10 years. At the moment enjoy the vibrancy of youth. The fresh fruit is at its peak and the aromatics will not increase. It is a difficult decision to make.
Freshly shucked oysters drizzled with lemon juice and a crunch of the pepper grinder. This would be perfect with the Frankland Estate Riesling. Looking for something warmer, try some scallops broiled quickly and dipped in a sweet chili jam.
