  Tasting Notes

Firmly perched amongst the finest Chardonnay produced in the country it is refreshing to see that Winemaker Gary Farr is not resting on his laurels. This release is quite possibly the finest yet released in this distinguished line.
The climate at the vineyard located in the Geelong region is one of the coolest in Australia. The soil is not as fertile as is the case with many other regions and this assists in the exceeding low yields of very intensely flavored fruit. It is then turned into wine with total barrel fermentation and natural yeast used to ensure that the wine is as natural as possible. There is plenty happening on the bouquet here.
There is plenty of fruit but it is not a fruit wine. The fruit flavors are in the stone-fruit and citrus spectrum with peaches and grapefruit being the most obvious. The oak is noticeable but again it is not an oaky wine. It is expressed with subtle vanilla and toasty characters. Evidence that the wine has seen some malo-lactic fermentation is also apparent on the nose. Indeed the bouquet has a myriad of components.
Although the palate is most impressive now it is still a long way from optimum drinking age. The fruit flavors are still quite fresh and they have yet to fully integrate with the richer overtones of the barrel fermentation. These characters enrich the palate adding texture and body.
Whilst the wine does not seem to be too crisp with acid, the finish lingers on for a very long time. Enjoy it now whilst it retains freshness, however there is every indication the wine will age for at least 6-8 years. At this time it will be fully integrated, smooth and mellow.
There are several options in matching this wine with food. With the fresh fruit character being quite evident at the moment it can be matched to seafood served with a butter based sauce. The citrus fruit and crisp acid will counterbalance the richness of the sauce. Richer food such as lobster could also work with the wine because of the concentration of the fruit. Chicken served with mushrooms is another fine alternative.
