Roman Bratasiuk is a great believer in allowing the vineyards to express themselves in his wine. He therefore makes two Chardonnays from two different vineyards. The "Norton Summit" vineyard is located in the Adelaide Hills, one of the coolest viticultural regions in Australia. The fruit drawn from this vineyard is delicate, aromatic and exhibits wonderful tropical characteristics. The wine when compared to other Chardonnays from around Australia would certainly not be considered light or delicate as it has the trademark Clarendon Hills power and assertiveness. The color for example is deep rich gold, indicative of low yielding vines. The wine was fermented and aged in old French barrels. On the bouquet there is a biscuit, almond meal like character, more common in White Burgundy than in Australian Chardonnay. The wine is very complex with some honeyed characters and the fruit flavors of white peach and nectarine combined with a subtle and savory herbal overlay. The palate sees a blending of these characters in a fairly rich melange. There are also some roasted hazelnuts and cashews along with toasty vanilla. The finish is exceedingly long with crisp acid. You can drink and enjoy the wine now, as is the case with the majority of Australian Chardonnay. However this "Norton Summit" Chardonnay is really made for aging. It will not reach its peak for at least 5-7 years. Serve the wine with a plate of succulent white fleshed fish that has been simply baked and dressed with a light sauce enhanced by citrus flavors. The great depth of flavor in the wine will ensure that all components in the dish will intermingle. |
