What a year 1998 turned out to be for Jeffrey Grosset. Named the inaugural winner of Australian Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year, Jeffrey was also named the finest maker of Riesling by an international panel at the Riesling summit held in Germany in December 1998. So now the world waits with great anticipation as to what Jeffrey will do in 1999. He has continued to do what he has always done, and that is make the best Riesling he can. This year's vintage is indeed a triumph. In appearance the wine is very pale, just registering a glimmer of lemon yellow with the slightest green tinge. This is basically a measure of the wines youth. It will slowly take on a more golden color with further bottle age. The nose reveals a complex array of fragrances. There are floral notes with citrus blossoms being most evident alongside talc and minerals. Added to this are some fruit characters with lime and orange being the most evident. This is classic Clare Valley Riesling where the floral, fruit and mineral components all seem to be in equilibrium. A change occurs on the palate. In a departure from the usual lean and angular wine that Jeffrey normally produces this years vintage is a little softer and more full-bodied. It is a little closed at first but once it has been exposed to the air for 15 minutes or so the fruit flavors really come to the fore. There are oranges and limes and they are quite ripe flavors, just stopping short of being sweet. There is a pronounced richness across the middle of the palate. Add to this a crisp acid finish, which makes the wine an ideal proposition to either drink now or hold onto for several years. Typically these wines will age well for 10-15 years. Perhaps this vintage won't last quite as long, simply because it is so attractive now. As this wine is just that little bit richer than the norm, try something different to the standard Riesling matches of spicy shellfish dishes. Select a slightly sweet flavored white-fleshed fish that has been either poached or baked and accompanied by a rich sauce flavored with citrus. The combination of the flavor and the richness of the dish would match up superbly with the wine. |
