How can the Clare Valley possibly repeat the great success of the 1997 vintage, regarded by many as one of the greatest years for Riesling ever? Whether 1998 will be as widely acclaimed remains to be seen. However, the master of Riesling, Jeffrey Grossett, has produced his 1998 "Polish Hill" and at this youthful stage it is more attractive drinking than the 1997. The appearance is a very pale mixture of apple green and lemon but practically glistens at you invitingly. Pronounced citrus flavors such as grapefruit and limes immediately are apparent on the bouquet along with the Grosset trademark slate and talcum powder. This wine seems to have riper, sweeter fruit than in past vintages. The generosity of fruit is even more obvious on the palate. There are other flavors there as well as the ripe citrus fruit such as marmalade and also a perfumed herbal character. The finish is dry and powdery with very crisp acidity. This gives the wine added power and length in the aftertaste. Whilst the wine drinks particularly well now it will still age as is the case for the very best Clare Valley Rieslings. Either drink it soon to get the impact of the primary fruit or leave it for 6-8 years and drink it as a fully mature, mellow and toasty Riesling. Young vibrant Riesling is just superb with fresh seafood, lightly cooked, with the flavors highlighted by a sweet chilli sauce. Prawns, scallops and when you come to Australia try our Balmain Bugs (a small Sand Lobster). The wine would also be a fabulous compliment to light pasta dishes that have plenty of citrus flavors in the sauce. |
