Print this Wine         1997 Grosset "Polish Hill" Riesling   AUBURN, CLARE VALLEY                 January Release   Riesling       Few wine lovers in Australia would argue with this wine's lofty reputation as the finest example of the Riesling variety produced in the country. This reputation has been established prior to this exciting wine, which in Jeff Grosset's most humble manner well be his finest Riesling to date. The appearance of the wine is very deceptive as it is pale lemon giving little indication of the concentration of fruit that is to follow. Intensity is the key descriptive phrase. Minerals, orange blossoms and lime juice are all apparent on both bouquet and palate. Other secondary flavors are evident as the wine continually evolves as it swirls around the glass. Spicy elements such as cloves and nutmeg along with some tropical fruit flavors. If anything the intensity of flavor on the nose is magnified on the palate. Steely and austere are words that don't necessarily convey the enjoyment of drinking this wine. However after such intense fruit the dry piercing finish makes it linger on in the mouth well after the wine has been swallowed. The vibrant acidity that tingles at the finish is the evidence of the wines potential for cellaring: for at least 8-10 years. Whilst the freshness of fruit flavor is at its absolute peak enjoy a few bottles, but do put a few away to drink in maturity as the wine will soften and develop generous honey characters. Spicy seafood salads with sweet chilli dressing are tailor made for this amazing wine. The tingle from the acid makes it ideal as an aperitif to be served with freshly shucked oysters or lightly cured salmon. The aromatic fragrance of the wine also lends itself to hot and sour Thai style curries. A wine with so much fruit combined with lively acid is so versatile when matching with food.
