The potential of this superb grape growing region is now being realized. Great Riesling has virtually been the sole domain of the Clare and Eden Valleys in South Australia, and rightfully so. However, the Lower Great Southern provides some worthy competition. Indeed this wine is a fine example of top quality Riesling that does not come from the traditional classic regions. There is an immense explosion of fruit and floral characters on the bouquet. The most prominent flavors are orange blossoms, lime juice, and a sweet and sour marmalade character. All in all, a rich and complex wine for an unwooded aromatic white wine. The richness is apparent on the nose develops further on the palate. This is a big and generous Riesling, very much a traditional Australian style, having little in common with European examples of the variety. There is ample acidity at the finish but it is softened somewhat due to the ripeness of the fruit. Although the acidity seems to be soft at the present it is lurking in the background and the wine has considerable aging potential up to 10 years. It is drinking well at this moment so do not feel obliged to wait that long to enjoy it. The ripe fruit flavors give this wine considerable scope in searching for appropriate food pairings. Sweet tasting crustacea such as prawns and scallops would be superb however strongly flavored white fleshed fish steamed and spiced with ginger and soy sauce would also work well with this wine as it is very full bodied for a Riesling. |
