1996 Bannockburn Chardonnay GEELONG January Release Chardonnay Gary Farr has held a lofty reputation as one of Australia’s finest winemakers for a considerable length of time. He deserves the accolades because he has never rested on his laurels, never felt that he has ever achieved his goals. The result is that his wine gets better and better. What we all thought was amazing in his mid 80s vintages is regularly surpassed by his current wines and this great Chardonnay is certainly no exception...... 1996 Clarendon Hills "Norton Summit" Chardonnay NORTON SUMMIT, ADELAIDE HILLS January Release Chardonnay Roman Bratasiuk is a great believer in allowing the vineyards to express themselves in his wine. He therefore makes two Chardonnays from two different vineyards. The "Norton Summit" vineyard is located in the Adelaide Hills, one of the coolest viticultural regions in Australia. The wines have always been good, due no doubt, to the superb piece of land on which the vines are planted and the supreme climate of the region. Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam are the real improvers. As they have become more experienced with their fruit they have been able to translate that into wines that not only express the pure varietal character but also display added nuances of complexity...... 1997 Grosset "Piccadilly" Chardonnay AUBURN, CLARE VALLEY January Release Chardonnay Now firmly established as Australia’s master of Riesling, Jeffrey Grossett has, in recent years turned his attention to towards Chardonnay in order to make another great white wine. The fruit is sourced from a vineyard in Piccadilly, in the Adelaide Hills. Here the climate is cooler than Jeffrey’s Riesling vineyards in the Clare Valley, as the altitude is slightly higher and the prevailing weather patterns moderated by the maritime influence of Port Lincoln...... 1997 Hill of Content Chardonnay MCLAREN VALE/ADELAIDE HILLS January Release Chardonnay This is quite a unique regional blend. All the fruit is Chardonnay but two distinctly different climatic areas are used to balance the wine. The majority of the fruit is drawn from the warmth of the McLaren Vale, whilst a significant proportion of cool climate fruit from the Adelaide Hills is employed to add delicacy and length to the wine. The resulting wine is a joy to drink now with the potential to develop further over the next few years...... 1996 Mount Horrocks Unwooded Chardonnay WATERVALE, CLARE VALLEY January Release Chardonnay There is great controversy in Australia at the moment over the virtues of Chardonnay that has not seen either fermentation or maturation in oak barrels, despite the fact that the French in Chablis have been making "Unwooded Chardonnay" for hundreds of years. There will never be another one like it so purely from this perspective it is a guaranteed collectors item. The vineyards at Bannockburn were almost totally decimated by a freak hail storm a few months prior to the expected harvest date.
