The net effect is certainly great wines, but wines that need at least 10 years in the cellar before they achieve a balance between all the components. With a slightly more delicate touch Dean Hewitson has produced a wine with all the intensity of old vine Shiraz, but it is approachable and enjoyable whilst it is youthful...... 1997 Mount Horrocks Shiraz WATERVALE, CLARE VALLEY January Release Shiraz Just a few short years ago the Clare Valley was regarded as a fine area to grow grapes, but they made white wine, most notably Riesling. Shiraz is the great red variety, in most of our grape growing regions and the greatest wines of the Hunter are certainly from Shiraz. The yields are exceedingly low, but in the dry years the fruit concentration is quite remarkable. This vineyard produces some of the best Shiraz fruit that is very distinctive in character. It is therefore bottled separately to retain its own "terroir"...... 1998 Brokenwood "Rayner Vineyard" Shiraz MCLAREN VALE January Release Shiraz Iain Riggs has always been impressed with McLaren Vale fruit, particularly of the Shiraz variety. This vineyard is low yielding and the wines have been remarkably consistent. The 1998 vintage was superb in McLaren Vale and this wine certainly shows this quality. There will never be another one like it so purely from this perspective it is a guaranteed collectors item. The vineyards at Bannockburn were almost totally decimated by a freak hail storm a few months prior to the expected harvest date. Crop levels were down to around 10 per cent of the average crop, and let me assure you these vineyards are low cropping every year...... 1999 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier CANBERRA DISTRICT January Release Shiraz Tim Kirk continues to amaze all wine lovers around Australia. This wine has achieved, in a relatively short time, cult status. The grapes used in this wine are picked from vineyards that are over 40 years of age. This shows in the depth of fruit flavor and rich texture of this wine. As an added bonus this vintage was spectacular in the Barossa Valley and the team at Elderton have taken full advantage of this...... 1996 Elderton Command Shiraz NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY January Release Shiraz This has proved to be a very consistent label with each subsequent year fulfilling the promise of earlier vintages. Don’t look for surprises with this wine as its archetypical Barossa Valley Shiraz. It is big in all facets with big fruit, big oak and big on structure. These wines work only when there is a balance between these components. The balance is achieved with an understanding of the grape growing phase and careful treatment in the winery. Richard Sheedy and his team have honed their skills over the vintages and this release could well be the best yet...... 1998 Hewitson "L'Oizeau" Shiraz MCLAREN VALE January Release Shiraz This wine gets better and better. With the volumes so low Tim searched around the country to try and find some grapes to so that he could still make wine and offer something to the legion of loyal followers he has developed over the past few years...... 1998 Carlei "Green Vineyards" Forties Old Block Shiraz HEATHCOTE January Release Shiraz Shiraz had always been one of Sergio Carlei’s favourite varieties and the Heathcote area in central Victoria has consistently provided some of the best fruit anywhere in the country. Here Sergio’s Italian background possibly helped, as he was able to negotiate with an elderly farmer who settled here after the Second World War and planted grapes. This vineyard, now named the “Forties Old Block” is grown organically and produces super low yields of fruit with amazing concentration...... 1999 Clarendon Hills "Astralis" Shiraz CLARENDON January Release Shiraz The color is very dark blood red, almost black with just a little hint of purple. There is an immense variety of aromas greeting you when you first sniff this wine. Black cherries, blueberries and plums. There is an overriding sensation of earthy, mushroom like characters and more lifted aromas with licorice bark, coffee and vanilla. There are some hints of other spices as well with some nutmeg, cloves and fennel. All of this and more follows on the palate...... 1999 Brokenwood Shiraz MCLAREN VALE/PADTHAWAY Current Release Shiraz As per usual Iain Riggs and his talented team at Brokenwood have sourced fruit for their Shiraz from vineyards far away from their Hunter Valley base. They believe careful selection of fruit is essential, and take great pride in producing a consistent wine from different vineyards. The 1999 vintage is drawn from two regions in South Australia, McLaren Vale and Padthaway...... 1999 Primo Estate "Il Briccone" Shiraz Sangiovese ADELAIDE PLAINS January Release Shiraz This is one of those “rogue” blends that works wonderfully well. Joe Grilli has crafted a wine that is 50% Shiraz, 35% Sangiovese and 5% of each of Cabernet, Nebbiolo and Barbera. Joe Grilli getting into Italian varieties. “Il Briccone” translates as “the rogue”...... 1998 Mount Horrocks Shiraz WATERVALE, CLARE VALLEY January Release Shiraz This wine has always been a sleeping giant of Stephanie Toole’s impressive portfolio of Mount Horrocks wines. The big difference with this label and the main Bannockburn label is the vineyard, which has been planted on a close spacing program to encourage competition between, vines. With this wine there is another very important variation as this wine contains a small amount of Viognier. You will not believe the difference this makes...... 1998 Craiglee Shiraz SUNBURY January Release Shiraz Pat Carmody lets each vintage speak for itself. A cool ripening period will see a wine with lifted perfumes and spice. With his fine Shiraz it also brings the elusive white pepper so often is it talked about yet rarely is it obtained. All in moderation to create a seamless and long finish...... 1999 Craiglee Shiraz SUNBURY January Release Shiraz This wine introduces itself with its trademark cool climate white pepper aromas, with lovely lifted fruit characters in the background. The palate offers spicy notes and a sour cherry fruit with hints of mulberry and blackcurrant, with soft pepper notes. There is just a hint of oak, but very subtle given Pat’s predominant use of old oak...... 2000 Clonakilla "Hilltops" Shiraz HILLTOPS REGION Current Release Shiraz A first time release from Tim Kirk. The fruit is sourced from three growers vineyards around the town of Young in the Hilltops region of NSW. It’s the neighboring region to Tim’s home base of Canberra. The area is slightly lower in elevation, and hence picked earlier that at Clonakilla itself...... 2000 Clonakilla Shiraz-Viognier MURRENBATEMAN, CANBERRA DISTRICT January Release Shiraz Tim Kirk has done it again. This Shiraz Viognier blend screams out Cote Rotie!! Its got that lovely game, smoked meat and spice character, with supple plum and cherry characters. Wonderful silky texture, and a finish that lingers long after you had a sip. The Viognier (about 5%) just adds to the generosity of the wine, amplifying all that the Shiraz has on offer. This is not your typical Aussie Shiraz...... 1999 Hewitson "L'Oizeau" Shiraz MCLAREN VALE January Release Shiraz Ruby, purple in color of this wine gives an indication of the depth of flavor of this wine, sourced from 70+ year old vines. Beautifully perfumed nose with plum and mulberry, and hints of spice and even violets. On the palate its plum heaven, dark and dense yet with some lovely red fruit characters giving the wine lift. The wine shows great balance, and a really well crafted mouthfeel. Beautifully concentrated without a hint of over extraction. The French oak integrates well. This wine has a long life ahead of it, but offers great pleasure now...... 1999 Mount Horrocks Shiraz WATERVALE, CLARE VALLEY   Shiraz This is Stephanie’s 3rd Shiraz release, and undoubtedly her best yet. The wine is dark and dense in color, and this is reflected on the nose.
