Seemingly as the vines mature this Bordeaux style blend has become one of the outstanding wines produced anywhere in the country. Whilst the 1994 release was a fabulous wine this vintage is superior in virtually all aspects...... 1996 Grosset "Gaia" (Cab Sav/Franc/Merlot) AUBURN, CLARE VALLEY January Release Bordeaux Blends Jeffrey Grossett picks a small crop from his Gaia vineyard, which located on a hillside far above the rest of the Clare Valley, making it quite possibly, the coolest site in the whole region. The vineyard is highly exposed to the elements and set on a bed of slate. Yields are therefore low but the quality of the resultant fruit is sensational...... 1997 Grosset "Gaia" (Cab Sav/Franc/Merlot) AUBURN, CLARE VALLEY January Release Bordeaux Blends This has always been a serious wines. What does that mean? Well some wines you can easily knock back a glass or two, even finish the bottle without realizing that you have been drinking it, however as soon a you take one sip of the Gaia you are forced to take notice and contemplate the wine. Grapes grow, actually they battle for life in this high altitude vineyard, the highest in the Clare Valley. The yields are low because the vineyard has lots of slate and is dry grown...... 1996 Frankland Estate "Olmo's Reward" (Merlot/Franc) FRANKLAND, GREAT SOUTHERN January Release Bordeaux Blends This wine continues the trend established over the last few years. Four varieties have been used to create this seamless "Bordeaux Blend", with Cabernet Franc forming the largest proportion in the blend, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Too many wines in Australia have been produced as totally made from Cabernet Sauvignon and the grape varieties typically blended with it have been forced into a minor role. This wine leads the way as being of the highest quality in the Bordeaux style yet it relies on the combination of the varieties and how they work together rather than isolated varietal characteristics...... 1998 Pikes Cabernet Merlot POLISH HILL RIVER, CLARE VALLEY January Release Bordeaux Blends Generally this is the lighter and slightly shy red in the Pikes stable. Not that it is ever a light red, just a little less full bodied than the straight Cabernet Sauvignon and indeed quite a different sensation to the powerful Shiraz which is so "in your face". This covers grape growing through to winery techniques. The warm and dry Clare Valley climate does the rest. The 1998 vintage was particularly successful with near perfect ripening conditions. This is the highest vineyard in the Clare, hidden on 5,000ft graziers property. You will never find it alone!! A very unforgiving growing location for the vines. They have toi work hard to reach down through broken slate to find nutrients...... 1997 Frankland Estate "Olmo's Reward" (Merlot/Franc+++) FRANKLAND, GREAT SOUTHERN January Release Bordeaux Blends This is yet another superb wine from Frankland Estate who continue to impress with wine that is both varietally true and correct yet displays an abundance of distinctive regional characters. The blend employs all five Bordeaux varieties with Merlot being the most prominent, followed by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and finally just a trace of Petit Verdot. Wines using all five varieties are very rare in Australia with most producers going for the more obvious varietal characters. This wine is far more subtle and complex by a long way...... 1996 Bannockburn Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot GEELONG January Release Bordeaux Blends Always the forgotten wine in the Bannockburn collection, this wine is once again an overlooked gem. The climate at Bannockburn is quite cool, and some would say too cool to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon. But Bannockburn Vineyards has one climatic factor in its favour and that is lack of rainfall during the ripening period. This allows slow but consistent ripening late in the fall of the grapes...... 1997 Elderton "CSM" (Cab/Shiraz/Merlot) NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY January Release Bordeaux Blends This wine blends three varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Shiraz (30%) and Merlot (10%). Generally the full bodied monsters from Elderton demand lengthy periods in the cellar, unless you are brave, but this wine has many of the big rich flavors yet it is packaged in a slightly softer finish to allow you to enjoy the wine as a youngster. Cool climate aromatics of violets, herbs, a little spice box, and well defined red currants are in evidence. On the palate, there are more fruit nuances, from boysenberry to blackcurrant and even cherry. Elegance is the hallmark of this wine.
