The key to making the best possible wine from these conditions is to ensure the vines are not stressed by heat and are allowed a little extra time on the vines to further develop flavor. This is particularly true for Cabernet Sauvignon in the Barossa Valley. It would be fair to say that it generally is not as successful as Shiraz across all producers. Elderton have always had great quality Cabernets and this release is one of their best...... 1994 Elderton Command Shiraz NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY January Release Shiraz Whilst the 1993 release showed a slightly mellower side to this traditionally powerful brooding monster of a wine, this release makes a return to the intensity and ripeness of the great 1992 vintage. Consistency over the last five vintages has taken the reputation of the "Command" right to the top echelon. This vintage has a lot to live up to given recent releases. I think it surpasses the most recent vintages and could well be the best wine yet released under this label...... 1996 Elderton Merlot NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY January Release Merlot Merlot has not yet made the same impact as a single varietal wine in Australia as it has done so in the United States. For no apparent reason. The nature of Merlot with its attractive forward fruit flavors and comparatively soft finish would seem to make it an ideal wine suited to the Australian lifestyle and dining demands. It will happen in time and with wines like this Elderton, the public will warm to the variety sooner rather later. In the meantime this wine can be slipped out of Australia and offered to you, so enjoy it...... 1997 Elderton "CSM" (Cab/Shiraz/Merlot) NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY January Release Bordeaux Blends This wine blends three varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Shiraz (30%) and Merlot (10%). Generally the full bodied monsters from Elderton demand lengthy periods in the cellar, unless you are brave, but this wine has many of the big rich flavors yet it is packaged in a slightly softer finish to allow you to enjoy the wine as a youngster. It traditionally has been the mainstay white grape variety alongside Shiraz for red. The two varieties both excel in the same climatic zones and it is appropriate that Semillon is the supreme white grape in the warm Barossa Valley. In exceptional vintages Lorraine Ashmead leaves a small amount of his Semillon on the vine for extended ripening, and has combined this fruit with other vineyard sources, to create a "Golden" Semillon...... 1997 Elderton Merlot NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY Current Release Merlot This variety continues to grow in importance in Australia and whilst it is fair to say the definitive Merlot style has yet to be revealed, the quality of the evolutionary wines is very high indeed. All the fruit comes off the Elderton Estate in the heart of Nuriootpa. Rich purple in color, the ’99 leaps out of the glass with boysenberry and plum aroma, with spice and hints of sweet grainy oak in the background...... 1998 Elderton Shiraz NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY January Release Shiraz This is an amazing wine for the standard release, considering there is the mighty “Command” in the line up. The grapes used in this wine are picked from vineyards that are over 40 years of age. This shows in the depth of fruit flavor and rich texture of this wine. As an added bonus this vintage was spectacular in the Barossa Valley and the team at Elderton have taken full advantage of this...... 1996 Elderton Command Shiraz NURIOOTPA, BAROSSA VALLEY January Release Shiraz This has proved to be a very consistent label with each subsequent year fulfilling the promise of earlier vintages. Don’t look for surprises with this wine as its archetypical Barossa Valley Shiraz. It is big in all facets with big fruit, big oak and big on structure. These wines work only when there is a balance between these components. The balance is achieved with an understanding of the grape growing phase and careful treatment in the winery.
