LOWER HUNTER VALLEY |
| Whilst very fond of the Hunter Valley as a superior area to grow Shiraz grapes, Iain Riggs, Winemaker and General Manager of Brokenwood, has for many years searched the country for other regions that produce fruit to complement that from his own vineyards. Great Hunter Valley Shiraz really needs several years before it peaks as a drinking proposition and this is not what the majority of the wine drinking public want to do, cellar the wine for at least ten years. Brokenwood still produce such a wine from a single vineyard called "Graveyard"...... |

| When Brokenwood was established it trail blazed the way for producers in the Hunter Valley to augment their wines in both style and quantity by blending fruit from other areas. This wine continues that trend although the unusual point about this wine is that the fruit has been sourced entirely from other premium regions. In this case it is from the McLaren Vale and King Valley regions...... |

| The Hunter Valley has one great white wine variety. Despite the rush towards Chardonnay in the 1980s, Semillon, has always been the Hunter’s finest variety. The typical style is one that is shy in youth but blossoms after 5 years bottle age...... |

| Semillon is a classic variety from one of the oldest wine regions in the country. Generally these wines require a lengthy period in the cellar before they are ready. Iain Riggs changed all this with his arrival in the valley. He has consciously striven for a style that would make superb youthful drinking. This wine now stands alone as the finest early drinking Semillon from the Hunter Valley and has appeal not only for traditional Semillon fanciers but also followers of other varieties enjoy the freshness and impact of this wine...... |

| Ever the master blender Iain Riggs has always searched around the country in order to find fruit to complement his fine base wine at his Hunter Valley base. There is a finite amount of premium vineyard sites in the Hunter Valley and rather than purchase inferior fruit for the sake of regional purity, Iain will bring in fruit to make a better wine. This vintage is one of his best efforts, without any question...... |

| This is a single vineyard Hunter Valley wine. Shiraz is the great red variety, in most of our grape growing regions and the greatest wines of the Hunter are certainly from Shiraz. The yields are exceedingly low, but in the dry years the fruit concentration is quite remarkable. This vineyard produces some of the best Shiraz fruit that is very distinctive in character. It is therefore bottled separately to retain its own "terroir"...... |

| Iain Riggs has always been impressed with McLaren Vale fruit, particularly of the Shiraz variety. This vineyard is low yielding and the wines have been remarkably consistent. The 1998 vintage was superb in McLaren Vale and this wine certainly shows this quality. This is perhaps the finest release of this wine...... |

| As per usual Iain Riggs and his talented team at Brokenwood have sourced fruit for their Shiraz from vineyards far away from their Hunter Valley base. They believe careful selection of fruit is essential, and take great pride in producing a consistent wine from different vineyards. The 1999 vintage is drawn from two regions in South Australia, McLaren Vale and Padthaway...... |

| The 1999 Rayner Vineyard Shiraz is the 6th release from this tiny dry land block of fifty year old vines. Concentrated brandy plum cake and dark chocolate are hallmarks of the style - distinctly McLaren Vale and distinctly shiraz. The colour is a deep purple red and quite dense. The oak maturation for Rayner is 100% new American oak. The vanillin lift and soft tannins complement the style. Dark chocolate, dark berry fruit aromas feature...... |
