Publication:   The Wine Advocate (Dec 2009)
Title:   Robert Parker - 2006 Hewitson Shiraz The Mad Hatter - 90+ pts
Comment: The 2006 The Mad Hatter Shiraz is opaque purple colored with an aromatic array of scorched earth, tar, beef blood, black currant, and blueberry. Ripe, dense, and powerful in the mouth, this savory, balanced, lengthy effort will evolve for 4-6 years and drink well through 2021.90+pts Wine Advocate # 186 Dec 2009

Publication:   International Wine Cellar (Sep/Oct 09)
Title:   Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - 2006 Hewitson Shiraz The Mad Hatter
Comment: Deep, bright violet. Intensely floral bouquet displays dark berries, cola, violet, wilted rose and Asian spices. Fleshy and smooth in texture, offering sweet dark berry flavors and betraying no rough edges. Impressively sappy on the finish, which strongly repeats the floral and cola notes. 91 points

Publication:   James Halliday - Wine Companion 2010 (Sep 2009)
Title:   James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion 2010 - 2006 Hewitson "The Mad Hatter" Shiraz
Comment: A single-vineyard wine with 20 months in French oak, which is counter-cultural in its elegant, medium-bodied profile and moderate alcohol; red fruits and touches of mocha and chocolate predominate.” Rating 94 points

Title:   The Penguin Good Australian wine Guide 2009 - 2006 Hewitson "The Mad Hatter" Shiraz
Comment: Great McLaren Vale Shiraz marries richness and softness in an irresistibly charming fashion. The brightness of this ’06 is striking; it delves headlong into pure ripe dark berries and spicy lifted fruits, and has already eaten up the oak, shows terrific intensity and richness. The palate has great drive and direction, delivering deep plum and spice flavours with finesse, rolled out on plush ripe tannins; long, composed finish. Rating 96 points

Publication:   The Wine Advocate (Feb 2009)
Title:   Wine Advocate #181 - 2006 Hewitson "The Mad Hatter" Shiraz 92pts
Comment: The 2006 Shiraz The Mad Hatter spent 21 months in new French oak. Purple-colored, it delivers an alluring perfume of pain grille, black pepper, plum, blueberry, and blackberry. Dense and powerful on the palate, this layered Shiraz will continue to unwind over the next 6-8 years and provide prime drinking from 2015 to 2030. The reliable Hewitson winery’s new releases are uniformly outstanding.

Title:   Eat and Drink - 2006 Hewitson Shiraz The Mad Hatter
Comment: Lots of winemakers claim their latest releases are the "best ever" and, with a relatively new label, this is possibly the case. However the 2002, 2004 and 2005 Mad Hatters were all very good - a testament to the Blewitt Springs vineyard that produces fruit for this wine. Without lining them all up I'm going to say this is the best, however it is arguably the most charming I've seen on release. Red fruits dominate cherry, quince and pomegranate with a core of sweet liquorice and soft spices, all very fragrant and attractive. The palate seduces but has a backbone of fine tannins that is hidden behind the charming cloak of fruit and silky mouthfeel. Despite its immediate charm it will gain with several years cellaring.
