Winemaker, Jonathan Maltus is an interesting and compelling character, with a great passion for fine wine (and food!!). The “rebel” within him came to the surface shortly after purchasing Château Teyssier in St Emilion in the early ‘90s. The creation and release of “Le Dôme”, one of the most renown “garagiste” wines from Bordeaux, propelled Jonathan onto the world stage. What might be an audacious move for others, strikes me as being a natural step for Jonathan, such is his ambitious yet orderly outlook on life. More recently, Jonathan turned his focus towards Australia, drawn by the realization that in Barossa Valley, an area not affected by the scourge of phylloxera, was a source of some of the oldest vines on planet earth. The purchase of a number of small plots of old vines, primarily Shiraz and Grenache, prompted the establishment of The Colonial Estate, and the release of his Aussie “garagiste” offerings, “Exile” and “Émigré”, with 2002 being the inaugural vintage release. An impressive beginning to what will undoubtedly yield even more spectacular results as the years progress.
